If you are tired of the beach try an excursion to Fort Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres de Pau Amarelo, popularly known as the Pau Amarelo Fort, at Pau Amarelo beach. Portuguese engineer, Luiz Francisco Pimentel, designed the fort at the beginning of the 18th century to protect the opening of reefs existing in that area through which, in 1630, the Dutch were able to penetrate with their vessels. Turned to the setting sun, it also has a small room with a dome ceiling that served as a chapel, devoted to Our Lady of Pleasures, where religious ceremonies, such as masses, baptisms and weddings were held. On the wall facing the sea, many cannons guarded against invaders.
