Setubal is an important seaport and a major sardine-canning centre; the most noteworthy monument in the city is the 15th-century Church of Jesus, founded by Justa Rodrigues Pereira.
Back in the 15th century Setubal was a royal residence unfortunately many of the older buildings of Setubal where destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.
