China has a recorded history that goes back 5.000 years, but some say that the history of China goes back as far as 200.000 years ago. It is certainly one of the first civilisations, it maybe the first country to have developed a commercial activity and 5.000 to 6.000 years ago the Chinese farmed their land and had domestic animals as well as livestock.

The agricultural region of China is drained by three major rivers, the Yellow River in the north, the famous Yangtze in central China and the Pearl River in the south. The country has a variety of environments such as immense mountain ranges, high plateaus, incredibly immeasurable deserts, and large plains.

The capital of China is Beijing, previously known in the west as Peking, and is located in the north; it is the second largest city, the largest city is Shanghai and it’s located near the Yangtze River.

China has more than 1.3 billion people living there, that is one-fifth of the worlds population. The majority of people in China belong to the ethnic Han Chinese group, there are 55 other ethnic groups, including Mongols, Tibetans, Miao and others.

Mandarin is commonly used in modern China, with a common language called Putonghua being taught in schools. There are many dialects being spoken all over China which makes it difficult for the Chinese to understand each other, but the written word which uses characters that represent words instead of pronunciation, makes it possible for all the Chinese dialects to be written in the same way, helping all Chinese to comprehend one another.

For those visiting China, it would be impossible to see it all in one visit. The country is vast and one visit would not do it justice. There is so much to see and do; walking on the Great Wall must be the ultimate experience, as it has been mentioned before, the Great Wall of China (which is man made and was build probably in the 5th century BC), can be seen from outer space.

The Army of Terra-Cotta Warriors is incredible each individual warrior is between 6ft and 6.5inches tall, all of the warriors have their own expressions and none look alike. There are over 7.000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses; the majority of the army is still buried in the pits.

The rivers of China deserved to be explored, just as a trip down the Nile is a must when you visit Egypt, a trip up the Yangtze must be phenomenal, the river is over 6.000 kilometres long and travels through 10 of China’s provinces and the city of Shanghai. The Yellow River is over 5.400 kilometres and is the second longest river in China after the Yangtze which is not only the longest in China but in all of Asia and the third in the World after the Nile and the Amazon.
