A small country town 4 km from Hania, Mournies has many metochia (monastic dependencies) around it.
It has existed since the Bvzantine and Venetian periods and was the birthplace of Eleftherios Venizelos.
Near the town are the 17th c. church of Ayios Eleftherios and many other churches.
The elegant Venetian villa of Koukounara was rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century. It has been host to emperors, kings and princes.
